#WellnessWednesday Tip: The Perfect Pedicure

As chilly weather descends upon Chicago, we extend a Wellness Wednesday tip from NoMI Spa. Today, we discuss the perfect pedicure for the upcoming wintry months!

parkhyatt-222

At NoMI Spa, we recognize that nail color is an essential element of a beautiful pedicure. Pedicure polish can certainly go through phases, from dark cherry, to bright coral, to candy-colored purple and glitter, just to name just a few. Many individuals will go from pedicure to pedicure, without stopping to let their toes go natural between polishes. However, the most nourished feet are smooth, soft, well-moisturized- and polish free! Winter is an excellent time to rejuvenate and refresh to regain healthy and beautiful feet.

For buffing to be as head-turning as fire engine-red toes, your feet need to look their best. Here are some tips:

  • Get in the habit of scrubbing your soles and heels every time you bathe and follow with body oil or moisturizer all over your feet (be sure to massage into your cuticles to keep them soft). At night, go for a thicker moisturizer.
  • Keep your feet protected from the sun during the day so they stay wrinkle-free in the future.
  • To top it off: buff. Look for a buffing block that is labeled with numbers or instructions on each side. You should start buffing (up and down or in circular motions) with the coarsest side of the buffing block and work your way to the finest side for the final buff.
  • Use the soft ends of the buffing block to brush away debris as you go.Done correctly, buffing will rid your nails of ridges and create a natural shine that looks almost like clear polish.

Buff is beautiful this holiday season!

Fall Beauty Tip: DIY Festive Scrub

It’s Autumn in the city, and we are embracing the scents and flavors of the season. One of our NoMI Spa nail technicians, Daniela, has offered up a fall beauty tip centered around the art of DIY scrubs:

“Not only is making your own sugar scrubs cost-effective, but they’re also easily adaptable to everyone’s preference. At NoMi Spa, we love to share our DIY recipes with our clients so they can bring the luxury of a spa day into their own homes. If you delight in the autumnal scents of coffee and pumpkin, you can turn them into a sugar scrub as well.

This scrub has a variety of beneficial nutrients for your skin. The sugars help to exfoliate dead skin cells while the coconut oil  is a miracle worker for the skin, as it nourishes, is antibacterial and antifungal, and proves to be an excellent moisturizer, all while bearing the scent of cookies. While coffee serves to minimize the appearance of cellulite and tightens the skin, pumpkin and honey smooth and hydrate the skin.

This multi-tasking DIY scrub is perfect to give as a gift, or to make a big batch and save it all for yourself.

Try out the recipe below and let us know how it worked for you.

2 tablespoons honey

Add more sugar or oil depending on the consistency you prefer.

Get to NoMI – Kevin Caravelli

We kick off this gloomy Monday by introducing a NoMI staff member with immense knowledge of wine and passion for music, Sommelier Kevin Caravelli. Kevin recently joined NoMI Kitchen after 3 years at acclaimed Chicago restaurant, Alinea.

Favorite Chicago Fall Activity:
The fall is a particularly special season for me because my birthday is on Halloween! It’s also a nice time that represents a change of pace; we eat heartier, belly-warming comfort foods and spend more time around the table with family and loved ones. My mother makes the best home-made pumpkin and pecan pies which I look forward to every year!

What’s your favorite item on the NoMI menu?
The Colorado Rack of Lamb is new on the NoMI menu for fall and it is a great dish which epitomizes the autumn season. I love the contrast between the spicy, crunchy textured chorizo chips and the subtlety of the lamb.

Something you might not know about him:
I am extremely passionate about writing and recording music. My style is reminiscent of the imagery the California Gold Rush of the mid-19th century, a time in our history which is drawn up as romantic, but in fact has deeply sombre undertones. Some of the artists that have influenced me are John Lee Hooker, Gram Parsons, and Television, a punk group from the 70’s. If my music had a scent, it would be tobacco.

If he could bring anyone to NoMI, who would it be and why:
I would bring Alan Lomax, one of the great American field collectors of folk music of the 20th century. He was also a folklorist, ethnomusicologist, archivist, writer, scholar, political activist, oral historian, and film-maker, and has been another major influence on me. I would love to ask him to record with me, and we could drink some wine together in NoMI. I would select a wine with age for us to share, that reminds us of the history of wine as we discuss the history of music.

Come by NoMI Kitchen to experience our new fall menu and enjoy your favorite glass of red or white, delicately poured by yours truly.

A #ManiMonday Tip for Autumn!

In celebration with the first #ManiMonday of the fall season, we’re bringing you a helpful tip from NoMI Spa supervisor and esthetician, Molly Lahood.  As the seasons change and the air gets drier, its important to think about the nourishment of your skin, including the cuticles around your nails.

Molly’s go-to season-changing manicure tip:

“Keep your hands and nails looking polished this fall with the help of our favorite Deborah Lippmann miracle workers!  Cuticles are the protectors of your nails and fingers, but they also can make your nails look un-manicured if not taken care of.  We recommend indulging in the Deborah Lippmann Cuticle Oil and The Cure cuticle cream to keep your nails in tip top shape!”

  •  Favorite travel destination?

Give me sunshine, a beach, and a good book and I am the happiest person alive, regardless of the destination.

  • Favorite Chicago activity?

It would have to be eating and drinking my way through the city. I still have so many places I want to go!  I love experiencing and enjoying all of the culinary talent that Chicago has to offer.

  • An interesting/unusual fact about yourself

It may sound funny, but leaving the house without earrings is probably one of the only things that gives me true anxiety. I have a pair of gold studs that are my go-to pair!

  • The most interesting aspect of the hotel in your opinion?

I would have to say the team we have. There are so many backgrounds and nationalities represented which has allowed us to create this beautifully diverse service culture. The staff in each area of the hotel are so experienced, knowledgeable, and unique, yet they fit together perfectly to provide consistent and quality service; I truly think it’s remarkable and something that sets us apart as a brand.

  • Which piece of art in the hotel speaks to you, and why?

The Rauschenberg in the main lobby. On a daily basis I have listened to guests, children and NoMI patrons give their opinions on the piece.  Some think it is the best artwork they have ever seen and others are simply confused! It has been eye-opening to discuss this piece daily and watch the reactions; it has definitely opened my mind to its value and the impact it can have on so many people.
