Get To NoMI: Aaron Young

After a beautiful weekend in Chicago, we kick off Monday by introducing you to one of our gurus of beauty and wellness from NoMI Spa, Aaron Young!  Aaron has been a Spa Concierge at NoMI Spa since it opened three years ago. Read on to learn a little more about Aaron.

Aaron Young - FOR USE 8.11

1. There are so many relaxing and rejuvenating treatments available at NoMI Spa.  Which is your go-to?

Without a doubt, the Hydra Facial. For a long time, NoMI Spa was the only luxury spa to offer this treatment at varying lengths (30, 45 and 60 mins). You can feel the results immediately and it’s a unique treatment because it’s a moisturizing and also treats the skin. *Insider tip: Come in for a Hydra Facial once a month for the best results.

2. Though short-lived, summer in Chicago provides a lot of fun. What is your favorite Chicago summer activity?

I actually prefer winter!  There are less bugs than in the summer and love fall fashions.  Weather that allows me to layer items with a good fall coat is what I’d prefer. Despite the bad reputation, winter in Chicago is actually really beautiful. To avoid drying out and stay healthy, it is really important to drink lots of water.  I try to drink up to a gallon a day.

3. What is something we, and our NoMI fans, might not know about you?

I love to bake! My background is in culinary studies so its always something I enjoy doing. I can do it for myself (no deadlines and no stress) which is very relaxing. My all-time favorites are truffles and pound cake.  I’m also really into DIY-ing my own natural aromatherapy body scrubs and treatments.  They are another great way to stay hydrated all year long.

4. If you could bring anyone to NoMI Spa, who would it be and why?

Definitely, Pattie Labelle — she’s my idol.  She’s one of those celebrities that is tangible, human, approachable…while also being a star. I would love to meet her one day.

Wellness Wednesday: the Guilt-Free Beauty Benefits of Chocoalte

At NoMI we have our fair share of love for dark chocolate and all its delicious goodness. On this Wellness Wednesday, however, we though you might enjoy some of the lesser known guilt-free beauty benefits of dark chocolate as told by The Huffington Post below.

dark chocoalte

If you believe eating dark chocolate is really bad for your skin, it’s time to change the way you think. Indulging in the sweet treat won’t make you break out. In fact, there are beauty benefits to getting “chocolate wasted.”

Dark chocolate (the good stuff that’s low in sugar and high in cocoa) is rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants that nourish skin. And its intoxicating aroma and conditioning properties make it the perfect ingredient for hair care. Still not convinced? Here are five reasons why you should add dark chocolate to your beauty regimen.

It repairs dry skin. Iron, calcium and vitamins A, B1, C, D and E are among the many nutrients that we can obtain from dark chocolate. Swap out that extra cup of coffee or green tea for a cocoa-rich drink that will deeply moisturize skin and leave behind a healthy glow. Or you could slough away dead skin cells with a DIY chocolate body scrub made out of olive oil, brown sugar, cocoa powder and vanilla.

It shields against harmful UV rays. Flavonols found in dark chocolate have been clinically shown to help your skin protect itself from sunburn, redness and other signs of UV damage. When applied directly to the skin, it also has the ability to repair and hydrate body parts that have been exposed to the sun. But we wouldn’t suggest slacking on sunscreen.

It erases wrinkles and fine lines. Things seem a bit calmer right after we nibble on a piece of dark chocolate, and we all know how stress impacts our skin. And as our friends over at YouBeauty explain, “Cocoa helps reduce stress hormones, which means less collagen breakdown in the skin and fewer wrinkles.” Sort of like eating your way to pretty.

It adds shine to lackluster locks. A homemade hair mask made out of unsweetened dark chocolate? Why yes! Add honey and yogurt to the mixture before applying to your hair. Cover with plastic wrap and leave on for about one hour. Wash out with a cold water rinse and you will have super shiny strands.

It promotes hair growth. Copper, zinc and iron are minerals that promote the cell renewal growth process, and dark chocolate happens to be full of them. So eating chocolate every day will increase oxygen and blood flow to the scalp and lead to healthier and strong hair.

Celebrate National Tequila Day with a Special Cocktail Guide from NoMI Kitchen!

If you “take life with a grain of salt…a slice of lime, and a shot of tequila,” then you’ve probably got a spot in your heart (and your mouth!) for this celebrated distilled beverage which is crafted from the blue agave plant of Mexico.

In honor of National Tequila Day, NoMI Lounge Manager, Sergio Campos, is offering up his expertise to bring you a few unique and exquisite ways to toast to Tequila this year.

“Tequila is a special spirit that’s festive yet has a unique versatility. It has the power to bring people together!” notes Sergio on the popular libation.

Check out two twists on the traditional margarita along with a foolproof recipe for the classic concoction. Enjoy!

The Classic One

1.5 ounces Cazadores Blanco Tequila
1 Egg White
3/4 ounce Lime Juice
1/2 ounce Pierre Ferrand Dry Curacao
1/2 ounce Agave Nectar
1/4 ounce Orange Juice
2 drops Orange Bitters

NTD - classic 2

Combine Cazadores Blanco Tequila, egg white, lime juice, Pierre Ferrand dry curacao, agave nectar, orange juice and orange bitters into a cocktail shaker. Shake well. Strain contents into a cocktail glass.

NTD - classic

“NoMI’s version of the traditional margarita is dry and easy to drink. The orange juice and dash of orange bitters are a great pair with the acidity of the lime juice and balance out the flavors for a smooth sipping experience.”

The One with a Kick

1/2 Roasted Jalapeno
1.5 ounces Cazadores Blanco Tequila
1 Egg White
3/4 ounce Lime Juice
3/4 ounce Grapefruit Juice
1/2 ounce Pierre Ferrand Dry Curacao
1/2 ounce Aperol
1/4 ounce Agave Nectar
Grapefruit peel for garnish

NTD - kick 2
Remove seeds from the jalapeno, and combine with Cazadores Blanco Tequila, egg white, lime juice, grapefruit juice, Pierre Ferrand dry curacao, Aperol and agave nectar into a cocktail shaker. Shake well. Strain contents into a cocktail glass and garnish with grapefruit peel.

NTD - kick

“I love this combination of bitterness from the grapefruit with the smokiness and spiciness of the roasted jalapeno. It’s an adventure for the taste buds!”

The Floral One

1.5 ounces Cazadores Blanco Tequila
1 Egg White
3/4 ounce Lemon Juice
1/2 ounce Kalani Coconut Liquer
1/2 ounce Rothman & Winter Creme de Violette
1/4 ounce Lemon Syrup
2 drops Rose Water
Edible flowers for garnish

NTD - floral 2

Combine Cazadores Blanco Tequila, egg white, lemon juice, Kalani, Creme de Violette, lemon syrup and rose water into a cocktail shaker. Shake well. Strain contents into a cocktail glass and garnish with edible flowers.

NTD - floral

Sergio’s secret ingredient: egg whites!
“The combination of egg whites, agave nectar and lime juice to create sour mix dates back to pre-prohibition days, making it a classic component of any delicious cocktail. The egg whites give these margaritas a frothiness that is soft to the taste and create a beautiful ombre color.”
